I am very pleased to announce that my good pals, The Kings of Convenience have decided to return to the United States to play two shows in California. So stoked that they invited me to come open for them at the legendary Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco and the Henry Fonda Music Box in Los Angeles.

During the summer of 2010, my old band Franklin for Short toured the East Coast with the Kings and it was an experience that I will never forget. These guys put on one hell of a show, and make it look all too easy. Not to mention, they also treated us like royalty.

I have assembled a four piece version of the Undertow for these shows which will include Trevor Beld-Jimenez on the drum kit, Evan apRoberts on bass guitar, and Tim Ramsay on the pedal steel. These cats can really play.

Looking forward to next Saturday October 8th 2011, when I head back to the world famous Mercury Lounge in Goleta with my old pals the Spires, who now feature Franklin for Short guitarist, Bryan Russell. Also playing is Millions, the new project from Le Petit Protest's creator Randall Sena. Gonna be a solid night of fun for sure.

Here's a photo I took of The Spires' front man: Jason Bays from a couple of years ago on a tour stop in San Diego, when I was playing some lap steel for them. They're still going strong, in-fact most people agree that they are better than ever. Check them out while you are still young.

Busker Fest + Tweedy Dream

I am coming back to Long Beach, this time to play at the annual Busker Fest downtown. I have only actually busked a few times in my life. A long time ago in Seattle, I actually needed to busk to eat lunch. I got a sandwich, and later that night we played at the bar along with a band called 'Beef Curtain'.
Anyways, Busker Fest should be fun. Looks like I'll be totally unplugged, and will probably come unglued. I go on at 5:45.

In other news, I had a gnarly dream last night that I was hanging out on a fire escape with Jeff Tweedy. He went to sit in a chair near the edge, the chair slipped, and he fell 4 stories onto his back. As he was falling he was staring up at me! I panicked, and went to get help. I thought for sure he was dead, but when the paramedics showed up, he was okay. Just a few bruises and cuts. Phheww!
I haven't listened to Wilco in a while, but Ghost is Born is pure mojo.

24 shows in a row sure flew by fast. From my start in Brooklyn to the last show in Jacksonville, the whole trip is a blur. I didn't really get enough time in any particular place to be a real tourist. Seems like a dream now. Some days I would get on the baby skateboard and cruise around the venues. It was so hot and muggy, I usually didn't make it very far. Other days I would tag along with Donny and score waves. I ended up surfing just about everywhere there was a bump in the water: Rockaway Beach, Nantucket, Cape Cod, Welfleet, Montauk, Ocean City, Dewey Beach, Asbury Park, Wilmington NC, Isle of Palms, Orlando (Lake Surfing!), Ft Lauderdale, and Jacksonville. I would like to say 'thanks' one more time to Donavon, his band and crew for letting me tag along and stir things up a bit. 24 shows and not a single broken string. Big Shaka + Cheers.

Thanks also to all the wonderful people I met. Stay cool out there. Congrats to Eric and Cat!

June was a busy month around here. Lots of miles put on the van, and we didn't even have to leave the state. We started the month out with our pals from San Francisco, Rad Cloud. We played 4 awesome shows with them and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. From Berkeley to Long Beach, from Mattson 2 to Little Wings, good people/good times.

After the stint with Rad Cloud it was time to meet up with Donavon Frankenreiter. Donny was doing his thing again along the California coastline and invited us to open a few shows for him. This was our first chance to play some of the theater sized venues in some towns we'd never been to. While Donavon spent some nights playing private shows, we did some extra-curricular shows of our own, including a few record store shows and a special appearance for the dudes at the Rhythm Livin warehouse.

I get a nasty cold once every two years. I got a nasty cold that went straight to my throat during the so-cal stint with Donavon. It hurt to swallow let alone sing. The whole thing reached its climax the night we played the ASSSSCAT! show at the UCB Theater in Los Angeles. This is my favorite place to play, the place where we only play four songs and comedians do improv comedy based upon my song "meanings" and lyrics. My voice sounded like Tom Waits hacking up Joe Strummer's loogie. The comedians were on point as usual and Tim Meadows confessed to me his love for skateboarding.

Donavon and his band are all righteous. They are the real deal, hard-working musicians who have been at it for a long time. His fans are great too, nice people looking to have a good time. We were treated great by everyone we met, minus one asshole. For my journey East in July, I will have to leave behind Trevor on the Drum Kit and the ultra-lovely woman who took these photos.

Truck Show was Happening

On April 30th 2011 I played a rad show in the back of a pickup truck. It was parked on Main St in Ventura in front of Urban Outfitters. The whole thing was orchestrated by Sean Tully. He "borrowed" a buddy's truck with the idea that he would do some live painting accompanied by some live sounds created by me. It was a great chance to experiment with some loops and multi-instrumentation. We both created in the sun for 3 hours. Was wild. Thanks to those who hung out and those who were downtown at the time.

Followed the Tall Tales tour. Built a bunk bed in the back of the van using fine cabinet plywood. Slept beneath the stumbling raccoons of Big Sur. Bought two wet cords of firewood. Woke up to sirens; a hobo going into pancreatic shock in the Mission. Showed up to the bar and sat down.

Panama is a world full of wonder, color, and heat. We surfed, explored, met unique people and got to hang with some dear family members. We found a beach where the winds were offshore 24/7. Six packs of cerveza cost $3 at "On the Run". To top it all off, I played a show. Not just any show, but the first ever concert at Los Del Patio in Casco Viejo. Thanks to some pretty rad locals who helped us out: Dillia Lantry, Raul Altamar, and Marko Mislov to name a few. I was told the country is changing, some say for worse, others say for better.

Elaine Marie (Maltais) Pettersen passed away peacefully in her home October 4, 2010 after a courageous three-year battle with cancer.

Elaine was born June 25, 1940 in Fall River, Massachusetts to Roger and Juliette Maltais. She lived in Hawaii, Washington, Arizona, Texas, and settled in Camarillo in 1980. She was an active member in many civic and community organizations her entire life, including Camarillo Rotary Club, and the St. John’s Hospital Board.

As a prolific and successful Real Estate Broker in Ventura County for 30 years, Elaine was known and admired by hundreds of families, clients, and colleagues. She always loved being of service to people in need.

Elaine was a tremendously joyful person. Among her favorite things to do were, gardening, cooking, listening to music, traveling, and spending time with her family. Elaine loved people and always wanted to know their story.

I was fortunate enough to be my mom's caretaker for the last two years of her life. It was a labor of love and she was able to teach me much about dignity and courage.

Little Black Wheels

A few months ago I played a fun show at Shelter Surf shop with the legendary Beau Young. Beau and I hit it off, exchanged CDs, and after the gig Beau headed back home to Byron Bay, Australia to dwell on his farm and write songs and surf empty waves. A couple of weeks later, another Aussie man named Mick Waters got in touch with me about using 'Baby Buddah' in his upcoming surf movie: "Little Black Wheels". He mentioned that the song would fit perfectly for a segment of the movie featuring the explosive stylings of the one and only: Rasta. Mick also used the song "Ride it Out" for a segment of the film featuring a very crowded summertime spot.

I received the DVD in the mail yesterday and I have watched Little Black Wheels 3 times front to back. It is a truly exceptional surf film, one with heart and the story and the surfing are timeless. It is an honor to be apart of such a wonderful work of art. Please check it out.

Driving Directions: (from Oxnard/Ventura) Take PCH Hwy 1 South from Las Posas Rd. Drive 4.2 miles. Park at La Jolla Canyon Trail Head. Entrance is on the left. Park on the side of the road for free.

Hiking Directions: Start at the Ray Miller Trail Head and take the La Jolla Canyon Trail north. Pass the waterfall, take the rock steps past the sandstone cliffs. Keep an eye out for the caves on the left side of the trail. Show will take place under the caves in the Shady Grove. The hike takes 15-30 minutes, easy-moderate and child friendly. Wear layers, sunscreen and watch out for Poison Oak.

"Show" starts at 2pm.

I went hiking with good friends the other day. It was gorgeous and the canyon we walked up was a total echo chamber. We hiked up to these sandstone caves and got the idea that it would be fun to do a "nature" show up there. So we are. The hike is not very strenuous, and you can park on the side of PCH for free. Everyone is welcome to come listen to us sing songs and feel the breeze.

Thanksurfing Day 2009

As usual I had to go surfing on Thanksgiving Day, but this year there was actually some waves! Good news was there was waves, bad news was everybody and his 50 kids were out surfing. I paddled out to what I call spot number 3. I'm not going to tell you what spot number 3 is really called, cause you don't need to know. Anyways, waves weren't all that at spot number 3 but the crowd was mellow...at first. 15 minutes later I was surrounded by grommets and dingbats. Good thing I was wearing a leash I thought, best not to lose the board and get sued by some pissed-off buff dad.

Caught a nice little shoulder all the way into the inside when the thing bogged out and I jumped off the front of the board, only to have the leash stretch out and sling shot the nose straight to my face. Thought I knocked some teeth out, but the hit just moved some around. Touched my mouth and my hand was covered with blood.

Went ashore and asked Sasha if it looked bad, she said "yeah it looks bad". So we went to Urgent Care and they were closed for THXGVNG, then went to County Hospital and the line was out the door full of people coughing up lungs and other wet junk. Finally we arrived at PV Hospital and they gave me 3 stitches, no anesthesia. Was tons of fun. Then we went home and I tried to eat the feast with half a mouth. Better luck next year boys.

Beehouse Christmas Show

The Beehouse Records Christmas show is clearly on it's way. The Sea Stones is an improvisational jam band which conjures up psychedelic grooves. Featuring all the members of Franklin for Short and Jason of the Spires. The Spires are of course, The Spires, if you haven't heard them yet, check them out obviously. Gardens and Villa hail from Santa Barbara and sound like this. Deep Magic is a deep magician who will take your blues away so fast and leave you drooling for more ambiance. Justin Dullum is a wizard himself, sure to set you off on the right foot for the rest of the night. Bring your (legal) drugs.
